Sam had unshakable faith that his path to the Commonwealth Games middleweight final was destined to happen.

The 22-year-old Dundonian, who avenged his loss to England’s Lewis Richardson at the European Championships, secured his place in the final against Australian Callum Peters. Hickey guaranteed himself at least a silver medal after stopping his opponent in the second round, on a day where three Scottish fighters secured medals.

Reflecting on his victory, Hickey said, “After experiencing losses in boxing, you go through a lot. I demonstrated my determination. When we saw the draw, we believed that it was meant to be, it was destiny, and it happened.”

He added, “I gave a flawless performance like that to show everyone that I’m here for one thing, and that’s the gold medal. I’m so confident heading into the final.”

This summer, over 250 athletes from Team Scotland are competing for medal success, supported by funding raised by National Lottery players.
