Sam has secured a boxing gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. The 22-year-old defeated Callum Peters from Australia in the middleweight final held in Birmingham.

The 75kg fight, which was contested over three rounds, was an intense battle and is being considered for fight of the tournament. Hickey won the split decision.

This victory is the culmination of an incredible week for the Dundee native, which began with his victory over Kyghan Mortley from St. Lucia. Hickey then secured two stunning stoppage wins against Benson Adeyinka from Nigeria and Lewis Richardson from England, which led him to the final against Peters, who has received high praise for his performances at the games.

Hickey emerged as the winner at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC). He is only the second Dundonian to achieve Commonwealth boxing gold, after the legendary Dick McTaggart, who became the lightweight champion in Cardiff in 1958.
